Business Analysis: Six Traits to Success

Even though you are not a business analyst yourself, if you have worked with enough business analysts over time you’ll learn what kind of characteristics and educational background can make a business analyst successful. Many business analysts have business systems training aside from undergoing other training programs such as in user acceptance testing. However, regardless of the business analyst’s educational background, experience, skills, certifications or domain knowledge, there are inherent traits that can help an individual succeed in accomplishing tasks related to business analysis.

In addition having a good business requirements training from an educational program well known in the business analysis, there are at least six traits that a business analyst must have in order to achieve success in his field of profession. The first trait is that a business analyst must be engaging. A business analyst who can communicate the value of the project with dedication and passion will inherently pull staff and stake holders into participation without needing to enumerate millions of reasons why they need to be involved. A business analyst must not be easily ruffled by conflict as he is the bridge that connects the world of the IT department and the stake holders or clients. Business analysts need to apply different disciplines and practices necessary to reach his goal and thus, a business analyst must be multi-disciplined.

A business analyst must be inquisitive because in his profession, he needs to ask as many questions as needed to help gather, validate, refine and implement requirements. A business analyst must know how to think and act strategically because work that doesn’t relate to the organization’s strategic goals has little value to the organization. The sixth trait of a business analyst should be about caring about the details. Successful business analysts know how important it is to have clear and precise details documented and communicated properly.
